In February 2002, ZEPPELIN PLUS was recognized with the bronze medal during the APS Literature Exhibition in Columbus, OH. The jury acknowledged the unique character of this book, which contains stories for the public interested in adventures and aviation history as well as interesting new material for philatelists.
The book begins with an introduction of Count Zeppelin's personal dreams and goals to build an airship capable of flying long distance. It describes his struggle (the Echterdingen disaster) and final success. The reading builds up to unbearable tension as the author describes the incident of the broken fin flight of the Graf Zeppelin, which is accompanied by nice black and white illustrations making it possible for the reader to envision the beauty of the airship.
The philatelic part of the book is based on the author's personal collection of American Zeppelin cachets and Hindenburg flight cachets. His discovery about the illegal English mail of the Graf Zeppelin flight from England in 1930 is sensational and very descriptively illustrated. Following this chapter are other philatelic information about the Chicago flight, the Commemorative cachets of the Hindenburg flight, the first North American flight and much more.
